Answer:

Electric supply in Penang or Malaysia is 240 volts AC, 50Hz. Power sockets are of the 3-square-pins type. You will need an adaptor for your 100-volt electrical equipment. Compatible adaptors can be requested at most hotels.

Answer:

  1. Remove shoes when entering homes and places of worship.
  2. Dress neatly in suitable attire which covers arms and legs when visiting places of worship.
  3. Handle food with your right hand.
  4. Do not point your foot at someone.
  5. When giving or receiving money gifts to/from a Malaysian, do so with your right hand.

Is it safe to drink water straight from the water tap?

Answer:

You are not advised to drink water straight from the water tap. Anyway, bottled mineral water is easily available in shops and supermarkets with sizeable selection.

Answer:

In general, Penang does not practice tipping. Most of the restaurants will charge 5-15% service charges but waiters will expect some loose change when paying the bills.

Most credit cards are acceptable at most hotels and major restaurants. But if you travel away from the cities or taking public transportation, you will need cash.

Smoking is prohibited in air conditioned public places by federal law. Offenders can be fined up to RM 500.00 if caught.
