Currency code

The Ringgit Malaysia (unofficially known as the Malaysian dollar), is the official monetary unit of Malaysia .

It is divided into 100 sen (cents) and its currency code is MYR.

 

Available Malaysian banknotes:
  • RM1 - blue
  • RM2 - lilac
  • RM5 - green
  • RM10 - red
  • RM50 - blue/grey
  • RM100 - violet

Foreign Currency Exchange Control

Malaysia impose a restriction of foreign currency exchange to

  1. Control the out flowing of foreign currency in term of cash and traveller cheques
  2. Control the in and out flow of Ringgit Malaysia (RM) including traveller cheques

Under this control *,

  • Traveling Malaysia residence allowed to take in:
  • Ringgit Malaysia not more than RM1,000 per person, and
  • Any amount of foreign currency in term of cash and traveler cheques   

Traveling Malaysia residence allowed to take out:

  • Ringgit Malaysia not more than RM1,000 per person, and
  • Any amount of foreign currency in term of cash and traveler cheques where total value not more than RM10,000 per person

Traveling non Malaysia residence allowed to take in:

  • Ringgit Malaysia not more than RM1,000 per person, and
  • Any amount of foreign currency in term of cash and traveler cheques

Traveling non Malaysia residence allowed to take out:

  • Ringgit Malaysia not more than RM1,000 per person, and
  • Any amount of foreign currency in term of cash and traveler cheques where total value not more than the total value brought into Malaysia

Application to export currency more than the allowed amount must get approval from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM, the central bank for Malaysia ) office. Applicant must present prove or documents on his/her needs to take in and take out that amount of money. As example, the document showed is an offer letter from university or college, billing letter on fees and daily expenses from university and doctor's letter on getting oversea medication or check up.
