KOMTAR (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak) is Penang 's tallest building. When this skyscraper topped out, (reached full height during construction phase) it was the tallest building in Asia . However, when it was fully completed, it was surpassed by Seoul 's Korean Life Insurance Building (KLI 63 Building). It is a 760ft (232m) 65-storey complex which consists offices, shop lots, food-courts and most importantly the Penang state government's office. Retail shops featuring clothes are also found on the second and third floors at Phase One and Two. Komtar was once the shopping haven for Penangites as shoppers could purchase almost anything under the sun. It is located in the heart of George Town . The name of the building is in honour to the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, the late Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein. Incidentally, the first piling of the building's phase one is done by Tun Razak himself on 1 January 1974. The complex's first phase was completed in 1978. Subsequent phases and extension of the complex is still in progress as of today. |
