The City Hall was built in 1903, at a cost of 100,000 Straits Dollars, to accommodate the expanding functions of the City government. The British Empire style architecture reflected the growing prestige and affluence of Penang at the turn of the century. Today it is the seal of the Municipal Council of Penang, the oldest local authority in the country, established in 1857. George Town was recognized as a City on January 1, 1957.
Penang City Hall was gazetted on 29 July 1982, under the Antiquities Act 168/1976, as an Ancient monument and Historic Site.
