Nine Emperor Gods Festival  

 

 

The Nine Emperor Gods festival falls from the 1st to the 9th of the 9th Chinese Lunar Month. The festival is better known as Kow Ong Yah in Hokkien spelling. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a Chinese festival to celebrate the return from heaven to earth of the Nine Emperor spirits. During the nine days, the devotees will go on a vegetarian diet. For those devotees who attend the ceremony, they will wear completely white.

In Penang, Nine Emperor Gods festival was celebrated massively. In fact, there are a lot of Nine Emperor Gods temple in Penang. During the festival, you can see a lot of yellow flag which is setup around the road which lead to the temple. Besides that, you can see a lot of vegetarian foodstall being setup during these nine days. These stalls will hang a yellow banner which stated the Nine Emperor Gods. These stalls provide variety choices of vegetarian meal besides the usual vegetarian shops that are abundantly in Penang. Some of these stalls are setup by cooks who come from other states outside of Penang.

There are a lot of ceremony since the eve of the nine days of the Nine Emperor Gods festival. The temple in Penang usually will be crowded with a lot of devotess from day and night during this nine days. At the eve of festival, the temple will organise a parade to welcome the deities. It is believed that the deities are come from waterways. So the parade will start from temple and reach at the seashore. After welcoming the deties, the parade will back to the temple. With this, it marks the start of the nine day celebration of the Nine Emperor Gods festival.

 

During this nine days, a lot of devotess will come to the temple to pray to the deities. At the same time, most of the temples in Penang will offers vegetarian Food. The vegetarian Food are not sell for profit but as a donation to the temple. You can hear drums playing if you come close to the temple which mark the on going ceremony. At the night time, there are more ceremonies which definitely catch your eyes. These ceremonies include some extraordinary action such as walking over the fires. These ceremony is running by the temple with strict restriction and spiritually.

In the middle of the nine days festival, there will be a parade which start from the temple and circle through the area. The deities will join in the parade where it is believed that the deities will give blessing to the people which stay at the area nearby the temple. There will be lion dance and other interesting performance during the parade. In Penang, the parade is organised together by several Nine Emperor Gods temple. You can expect a delightful parade where there are a lot of beatiful and colorful parade vehicles.

 
The parade can be seen again on the last day of the festival. During that time, a special Nine Emperor Gods boat can be seens. The parade will lead back to the seashore where the boat is believed to carry the deities back to heaven. In general, Penang is one of the states in Malaysia which celebrate Nine Emperor Gods festival in large scale.
