Lor Bak (or sometimes written as loh bak) is made up of 2 words, "Lor" and "Bak". Both words are translated from Hokkien Dialect. "Lor" means thick dark soy sauce gravy while "Bak" is meat. In short, it is a mixture of fried seasoned meat which normally comes with gravy sauce and also sweet chilly sauce. This Penang old favourite food is normally ordered as a delicious snack which complements the main meal.

Wtih experience of making and selling Lor Bak since year 1971, there is no better place to enjoy a nice plate of Lor Bak other than at Kheng Pin cafe. It is located at Upper Penang road, or exactly at the junction between Jalan Penang and Jalan Seri Bahari. The famour Lor Bak stall starts business at early morning around 8am. Till then, the owner will keep busy frying the Lor Bak till all his ingredients are finished. This suggests how popular Lor Bak is. Although the shop close around 3pm, the Lor Bak are normally sold out by 2pm. So, for those who wish to try, it maybe good that you patron this stall earlier than 2pm to ensure the wide availability of choices.

One main difference between the Upper Penang Road and other stalls selling lor bak is that the owner still insist to use the traditional ingredient. To make an order, you can choose variety of ingredients to make up a plate such as lor bak (pieces of seasoned meat which wrapped in soft beancurd skin and deep fried), prawn fritters, fried tau kua (fried bean curd), fried sweet potato, fried yam, fried spring roll, fried squid, century eggs, and many more.Or you can choose a mixed platter which customers normally will order during peak busy hours such as lunch time. Then the ingredients ordered will be deep fried for a while before cut into slices. Slices of cucumbers will add to the plate before served to you. Of course, the delicious lor bak will come with the home made chilli sauce and also the thick dark soy sauce gravy. We would suggest you to dip the ingredients in to the sauce before put it in your mouth. Try it and you will have a unforgettable experience of tasting lor bak in Penang.
