Penang has 1.2 million people, more than half of whom live on the island. The population is ethnically split between Chinese , Malays and Indians , the largest of the three groups being the Chinese followed by the Malays. For one reason or another, Penang has not endured any difficulties with such a diverse ethnic mix that has brought to other parts of the country - it is known for its tolerant and peaceful society. |
The official religion of Penang is Islam and the head of Islam is the Yang Dipertuan Agong , but other religions are freely practised. Aside from Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Hindusm and Sikhism are prominent. Muslim mosques, Buddhist and Hindu temples, and Christian churches are commonly found throughout the island. Visitors can expect to be amazed by the diversity and profusion of festivals and other religious celebrations which occur regularly throughout the year.
